The military scratch is a very common scratch combo. It was popularized in the 80’s and has a very signature sound. Unfortunately, this sound is cheesy. However, the military isn't limited to the sound it’s known for.
There are a lot of things you can do to make the military scratch unique and full of fire. The main component is the stab scratch technique, which is an aggressive scratch. The other component is the baby scratch technique, which can be done at blistering speeds. Scratching fast is another great way to load your cuts with aggression. When doing the military fast for longer periods of time, you can bet your audience will feel the intensity.
MILITARY SCRATCH PATTERNS
Once you get accustomed to executing the standard military scratch, you’ll likely want to move away from the cheesy sound.
The standard military pattern is done in the following way: stab, baby, stab, stab, baby, stab, stab, baby.
It’s also done at about a medium rhythm. While you do need to learn some form of this to handle the technical challenges of going back and forth from stabs to babies, if you continue to do your military patterns like this, you’ll continue to sound generic and cheesy.
Breaking out of this is actually not that difficult. You simply do more stabs, or more babies.
Military Scratch Pattern Examples:
1. Stab, baby, baby
2. Stab, stab, stab, baby
3. Stab, stab, baby, baby
4. Stab, baby, baby, baby
5. Stab, stab, baby, baby, stab, baby
From there, you can start connecting these types of patterns to create longer, more unique patterns. If you want to ramp up the aggression, you simply speed up the patterns. If you really want to ramp up the aggression, you’ll need to make stabs the primary component.
MILITARY SCRATCH COMBO VARIATION
If you really want to move away from the standard military sound, an even more unique approach is to start the military with babies instead of stabs. Technically, this is not a military because a military is a stab baby combo and what I’m suggesting is a baby stab combo. However, it’s similar enough to get a military type of feel, with less danger of sounding like a traditional military.
Keep in mind, baby stabs are less aggressive sounding than stab babies because the baby is being emphasized versus the stab. Since babies are less aggressive sounding than stabs, the baby stab is a great way to back off the aggression when you need to mellow out. The audience can only handle so much aggression, so balancing out into something mellow is important.
However, you can still sound aggressive with baby stabs, should you choose to do so. You simply do it quickly and with a lot more stabs.
Baby Stab Pattern Examples:
1. Baby, stab, stab
2. Baby, stab, stab, stab
3. Baby, stab, baby, stab, stab
4. Baby, stab, stab, baby, stab
5. Baby, baby, stab, stab, stab
ADDING EVEN MORE FIRE INTO YOUR MILITARY
If you really want to maximize the emotional intensity the military scratch is capable of, you need to do more than perform it quickly and with lots of stabs. You need to also do it in a high pitch range. The higher the pitch range, the harsher and more aggressive the military will sound.
This is the trifecta of emotional intensity in scratching:
1. Sharpness
2. High speed
3. High pitch
To give your audience the most intense experience possible, you’ll need to do these three things. The military scratch is an excellent choice for getting this accomplished.
FREESTLE SCRATCHING WITH THE MILITARY
The tactics I’ve described for turning the military from cheesy to aggressive are definitely helpful, if you want to make the military part of your freestyle vocabulary. The more aggression you want to pour into your freestyle, the more my tactics will aid you in getting this accomplished.
However, to really load your freestyles with emotional firepower, you’ll need to do a lot more than just implement this advice. It’s very difficult to train on your own because it’s a long, tiresome journey. If you want to achieve more with less effort and less frustration, you should join the DJ’s I’ve trained to scratch more successfully.
Getting your audience to have an intensely positive reaction to your scratching isn’t easy, but it can be done. The fastest and easiest way to make your audience love your freestyling is to start my freestyle scratch training.
