Before Hitler committed suicide, he nominated Grand Admiral Donitz as his successor as German leader. When Berlin fell Donitz set up his new government at Flensburg in North Germany.
On the 23rd May 1945 the Allied Forces in NW Europe mounted "Operation Blackout" the plan to arrest the members of this new government, the Herefordshire Regiment took a key part.
Along with a talk by Herefordshire Regimental Museum curator Colonel Andy Taylor OBE DL, on display was Grand Admiral Donitz's car pennants and Grand Admiral's baton, both "liberated" by the Herefords, this is only the third time they have been reunited publicly since 1945! Further speeches from His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire Edward Harley CBE and Hugh Patterson Chairman of the Trust of the Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum.
All funds raised are going directly back into running the Museum which receives no formal funding or support!
