"Sorry About The Sound - We Need New Microphones!" A look into a SOXMIS Card issued to British Forces in the BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) during the Cold War.
BRIXMIS and SOXMIS were created in 1946 following an agreement between the British and the Soviet Forces in Germany to keep communications open, improve understanding and assist with the post-war movement of displaced persons and reconstruction in the occupied zones. The hardening of the Cold War soon changed these peaceful intentions, leading to all sides raising their surveillance of the other in the need to plan for any possible future aggression.
All British soldiers stationed in Germany after the war were issued spotter cards so that if they saw a SOXMIS number plate they would ring up the number on the card and report it. This enabled the British to see what the Soviet Union were doing, and vice versa. If, for example, SOXMIS car number 44 was seen and reported, Allied forces could decide what action to take, which might be anything from surveillance to no action at all.
