Here's a few tips to remember when using a foam roller:
Never lie face up on a foam roller. As you roll over your muscles, your back will become hyperextended. This can jam the spinal joints and can lead to more back pain later on. The key is to lie slightly to the side, so you're rolling over one side of the low back only.
For low back trigger points, its important to find a muscle knot and hold that position from 30 seconds to a minute. Most people roll back and forth and really don't take the time to get rid of their muscle knots. Find a spot, hold it there, and then move on to the next spot.
