In the 1960s, the emergence of the early music rediscovery movement was also driven by instrumentalists who were very actively involved in the newest contemporary creations. It was in this context that Pierre Bartholomée wrote Le tombeau de Marin Marais for the musicians of the Alarius ensemble who, moreover, were also active with the Musiques Nouvelles ensemble.
