Bubamara is a fun song from the Romani culture. It talks about a ladybug as a metaphor for a beautiful young girl who doesn't want to get married quite yet.
The Roma people are traditionally nomadic, and significant populations can be found in the Balkans, in some Central European states, in Spain, France, Russia and Ukraine. They originated in Northern India, but arrived in West Europe and Asia in the 14th century. Historically, they faced horrible conditions, with legislation forcing exile, slavery, child abduction, and other hostile treatment towards the Roma people. Pushed to the outskirts of society, many migrated east towards countries that treated them a bit better, so long as they paid a high tax to the governments. Their flag has a spoked wheel, characteristic of the wagons they would travel in.
Personally, I am inspired by how happy they seem no matter the adverse conditions. I also find it fascinating how they keep their culture strong and their music, fashion, art, and food seem to have a distinct character. In my extensive study of balkan folk music this semester, I was most intrinsically drawn to the music of the Roma people, so I have decided to share it here with you all! :)
