Our Sunday picnic drive:
Muthathi (or Muttatti) is a settlement situated on the banks of the Kaveri river near Malavalli in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is surrounded by a dense forest which is the home of the Kaveri Wildlife Sanctuary and with the Cauvery river flowing through it, is an amazing setting for wildlife and nature lovers.
The forest department check-post are on constant alert & do a thorough check of your vehicle. This is to ensure that visitors are not carrying banned substances like liquor, plastic, poaching equipment, etc. But the place remains dirty because of human negligence and greed.
Do not venture here on a weekend. If at all you plan one, then plan an early morning drive by around 7 am.
The best way to access the forest is through Bangalore-Kanakapura Highway. Take a left at Sathanuru and once you reach the village, continue further on the same road towards the forest. Since the river and the forest area is associated with Sita and Hanuman, it also is a place of religious significance and draws a lot of crowd.
The forest itself is quite amazing and the best time is to visit is during early morning. The look and feel of the forest changes with the seasons. It is quite a fascinating experience to see wild trees like "Flame of the Forrest" bloom & the different hues of the trees leaves and topography during summer months. While the trees and shrubs wear a withered brownish-green look during winters, the forest wears a green canopy during the rainy seasons – the season which we were there.
It is home to a good number of bird species and wildlife, including elephants, langoor, spotted deer, fox, mongoose, Indian monitor lizards and some reptile species. But keep a low profile if you are photographing wildlife as there are some restrictions around it.
The forest road leads up to a small hill with a village temple - often, when you are passing through early in the morning, the mist comes down and makes the route quite an awesome experience, but also dangerous. In some of the spots, nearing the hillock temple, the shoulder of the road drops off into deep ravines.
The access to the river from the forest road has been cut-off with deep trenches. There have been too many cases of suicides and accidental deaths due to the whirlpools and sharp rocky riverbeds, so the forest department takes additional precaution to monitor the movement of people through the forest. Access to Mekedatu, which was possible after crossing the river, is now possible only through a road. Swimming or waddling in the river water is strictly prohibited and there are plenty of warning sign-boards warding off the adventurous kinds who wants to take a dip in the river on the sly.
After a few kilometers on the forest road, you will come across a small Hanuman temple. This is a great spot to relax and watch the gushing river water and enjoy the serenity of the forest. If you are carrying snacks, watch out for the monkeys as they are omnipresent right through the forest road!
After our breakfast picnic, we were heading to Ganalu falls. Our bad luck, the water at the falls was hardly seen since the nearby dam gates were closed. We shall visit this place again in an SUV because with the road condition (last 4 kms) to this falls, it is quite difficult to driver your hatch back or sedan through without bumping or scrapping the bottom.
