What if the first step to peace… was simply how you breathe?
Beloved, when chaos swirls and fear grips your chest, your breath becomes shallow—short gasps that signal danger. But God has given us the breath of life, and in that breath is power.
In this Sacred Pause, Dr. Zina invites you to breathe differently in the chaos. You’ll learn a simple breath practice (inhale for 4, exhale for 6–8) and receive 4 Scripture-based breathing tools in the comments.
BREATHING AND PRAYING THE WORDS OF SCRIPTURE
The Breath of God
"The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life."
This verse offers a profound and calming perspective. When you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, you can use this scripture as a foundation for a meditative practice:
Inhale: As you inhale, imagine you are breathing in the very "breath of the Almighty." With each breath, you are taking in life, strength, and peace directly from your Creator.
Exhale: As you exhale, release your fear, stress, or worries. Picture yourself letting go of the anxieties that are weighing you down.
Repeat: As you continue this cycle, repeat the scripture to yourself, a mantra of sorts: "The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life."
2. The "Be Still" Breath
This is a simple but powerful technique based on Psalm 46:10. It is about actively choosing to release control and trust in God's sovereignty.
Scripture: "Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)
Technique:
Inhale: Silently say to yourself, "Be still, and know that I am God."
Exhale: Release the tension in your body. Let go of whatever is on your mind and the need to control the outcome.
Purpose: This technique is especially useful when you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or tempted to rush. It is a direct command from God to pause and remember that He is in control.
3. The "Peace I Leave You" Breath
This technique draws on one of Jesus's most comforting promises, found in the Gospel of John. It is about actively receiving the peace that Jesus has already given us.
Scripture: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you." (John 14:27)
Technique:
Inhale: Breathe in deeply, meditating on the words, "Peace I leave with you." As you do, imagine receiving His peace as a gift.
Exhale: Slowly release your breath, whispering or thinking, "My peace I give you."
Purpose: This practice helps to internalize the reality of Christ's peace. It's not a peace that the world gives or takes away, but a deep, abiding calm that can anchor you even in the midst of chaos.
4. The "Spirit-Filled" Breath
This technique is a beautiful way to connect with the presence of the Holy Spirit, the very breath of God that gives us life and purpose.
Scripture: "With that he breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" (John 20:22)
Technique:
Inhale: As you breathe in, open your heart and mind to receive the Holy Spirit. Silently say, "Receive the Holy Spirit."
Exhale: As you breathe out, imagine the Spirit working through you, empowering you to live your life for God's glory.
Purpose: This breathing prayer is a reminder that the Holy Spirit is our constant guide and source of strength. It transforms a simple physical action into a prayer of surrender and empowerment.
Scripture Reference: Psalm 46:10
