In January 1957, 18-year-old apprentice mechanic Lex Smith, his younger brother Trevor, and 4 other mates, drove west seeking adventure in the bush, chasing wild cattle on the large outback stations.
This film was created as part of a university assignment which has prompted a wonderful journey with my father as he recalls the adventures of his youth for my recordings.
It is a story about the first 3 years of my fathers life in Taroom, from 18 to 21 years of age, when he worked alongside his brother and many mates on Glenhaughton Station, a 900 square mile remote cattle property in Central Queensland, at that time encompassing most of the rugged Expedition National Park.
It is a short film about how things were done in the bush back in the 1950's. It's about stockmen, mateship, and living a young man's dream... chasing wild cattle in the freedom of the Australian bush.
**NB Edit to caption in video at 5:50-5:53, 2 men sitting on the top rail of the stockyards, should read: "Pat Jounquay and JOHN McMullen 1957"
