NHIS coverage gaps are forcing Ghanaian hospitals to demand upfront deposits for emergency and critical care, says health expert Dr. Ishmael Norman.
His comments follow the tragic death of 29-year-old Charles Amissah, who was reportedly turned away by Ridge Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, and the Police Hospital due to no available beds.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Dr. Norman explains that the “no-bed syndrome” is compounded by limitations in the National Health Insurance Scheme, which leaves hospitals unable to fully cover treatment costs for emergency cases.
