During the War of the Spanish Succession, thirteen Royal Navy ships were lost. Dozens of merchant vessels sank. Thousands of sailors drowned at Milford Haven and the Goodwin Sands. Entire towns were torn apart, forests flattened, and windmills burned across southern England.

With no modern weather forecasting or organized emergency response, the people of 1703 faced hurricane-force winds and catastrophic flooding with little warning.

The Great Storm of 1703 remains the deadliest storm in British history — a moment when nature achieved what enemy fleets could not.
