We continued our journey south through the Caribbean, leaving Salinas, Puerto Rico, and sailing 19 hours to Christiansted, St. Croix, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Although following guidance from Passages South about the “Thornless Path,” our timeline and risk tolerance meant motoring more than sailing. Still, we were excited to be progressing south and grateful for mild seas and finally being free of engine issues caused by bad fuel earlier in the journey.
Arriving before dawn, we waited for daylight to anchor and enjoyed the peaceful morning—interrupted only by a surprising seaplane takeoff. Exploring St. Croix felt very American, with great food, clean streets, and friendly service. We toured the Danish colonial historic area and we were surprised to learn that cars drive on the left side despite using American vehicles with left-side steering wheels.
The next day we did laundry, discovered the well-stocked St. Croix Marine Chandlery where we found our elusive secondary fuel filters, and later visited Mutiny bar, where we sampled breadfruit vodka (with no plans to try it again!). We learned the history of breadfruit’s connection to the Mutiny on the Bounty.
For a final celebration before a weather window to Martinique, we dined at The 1756 Grotto, a restaurant in a historic Danish building connected to young Alexander Hamilton. Later, we enjoyed live music before departing early the next morning.
As we sailed along the island’s coast, we spotted the massive radio telescope that is part of the U.S. Very Long Baseline Array, and passed Buck Island, a national reef monument that we plan to revisit. Our overall impression was that Christiansted felt very American, and we hope to visit Frederiksted next time.
