The Riches of Carriacou

Описание: After enjoying Martinique, we finally caught a weather window to sail south to Grenada—our long-term goal for spending hurricane season. Although we arrived late in the season, reaching Carriacou felt like a major milestone. Grenada holds special meaning for us, as we took ASA sailing classes there in 2019, and this passage marked the start of exploring the country more deeply.

The 18-hour sail began with light winds and small seas, but an uncomfortable following sea made sleep difficult until we reached the lee of St. Vincent in the early morning hours. A flying fish surprise in the cockpit added some excitement along the way. Rain greeted us as we arrived in Tyrell Bay, but anchoring was easier than expected.

Grenada is one of the safest places to ride out hurricane season due to its location below the hurricane belt, favorable ocean conditions, and historical storm patterns. Being here also satisfies insurance requirements and allows time for planned boat maintenance later in the year. Most of all, it was a relief to finally feel settled and unhurried.

We explored Carriacou by land and sea—navigating steep roads, seeing lingering hurricane damage from Beryl, and discovering local favorites like Alexis grocery, the chandlery, and Wayne’s Bar. We visited Hillsborough, Sandy Island, and nearby anchorages, experiencing strong winds, mooring challenges, and excellent snorkeling.

Highlights included the newly installed “A World Adrift” underwater sculpture park, vibrant local food, friendly island hospitality, and abundant marine life—from squid under the hull to puffer fish, eels, and colorful reef fish. Despite visible storm damage, Carriacou’s beauty, culture, and resilience made it a rewarding and memorable place to begin our hurricane-season stay in Grenada.
