Our journey through deconversion gave us freedom - Susurra band

Описание: Today I spoke with Paul Vinsonhaler and Brian Kruzan of the atmospheric pop band "Susurra." They both grew up strongly exposed to evangelical Christianity and gave their lives to Jesus as they grew up, but they both ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.

We discussed many topics, including:

(Paul)
• Trusting Jesus as his Savior at a very young age and rededicating his life to Jesus several times as his faith and theology deepened.
• Frequently praying and dialoguing with the Lord throughout each day.
• Struggling with the knowledge that some friends and family were not Christians.
• Deepening his theology and diving into apologetics during his college years.
• Getting involved in mission trips and other ministries, but sensing dynamics of colonialism woven into some of the mission
• Facing philosophical concerns and a strong "fear of doubting" but hoping that other more mature Christians had good answers.
• Opening himself up to hearing from secular scientists and historians.
• Starting to be open to the possibility of complex answers outside
• Experiencing much more peace after deconversion than while a Christian.
• Finding himself being even more loving to other people post-Christianity.
• Healing from religious trauma.
• Observing most Christians not making any attempt whatsoever to "save" him again post-deconversion.
• Providing kids with the autonomy and freedom to investigate make their own path in life, while also instilling in them messages of self-love.
• Losing fear and coming to a strong place of peace about death and the loss of the afterlife.
• Being able to respect and appreciate other people's worldviews more than ever before.

(Bryan)
• Trusting Jesus as his Savior at a very young age and growing up with an Assemblies of God pastor.
• Being heavily focused on teachings about the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, revival, prayer, worship, and the power of music.
• Hearing messages and skits about hell and eternal damnation.
• As his theology grew, feeling the pull to focus his gifts and ministry on music and worship.
• Starting to lose his ability to adhere to and defend the inerrancy of Scripture.
• Moving toward Progressive Christianity for a while before fully deconverting.
