A crash on State Road 4 killed two children and injured two others on Friday morning.
Shortly after 8 a.m. on State Road 4 just south of Middlebury, the Elkhart County Sheriff's office responded to the scene of a crash between a horse drawn buggy and pickup truck.
Both the buggy and truck were traveling west on State Road 4 when the truck collided with the back of the horse drawn cart.
According to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, there were four children in the buggy.
Two were brought to the hospital for serious injuries, and two were pronounced dead in the 13000 block of State Road 4.
When speaking to community members about the crash many were hearing about it for the first time.
"Wondering who it was really and prayers for the family and everything because I know what it's like,” said Middlebury Resident Anthony Miller.
State Road 4 does appear to have buggy lanes which include include parts of the road that extend about 10 to 12 feet to accommodate horse drawn buggies.
WSBT reached out to Elkhart County and INDOT officials to confirm where official lanes are.
Elkhart County Resident Lynn Jones, who grew up Amish, shares he believes buggy lanes are helpful and more of them would help curb accidents.
INDOT has tentative plans to add more buggy lanes to US 20 between County Road 35 and State Road 13.
Construction is scheduled to start summer of 2028 as part of the US 20 Section 2 project, with land acquisition expected to begin in fall of this year.
It's still unknown what led up to the events of the crash or the status of the pickup driver.
The Elkhart County Crash Investigation Team and the Elkhart County Sheriff's office are currently investigating.
