Описание: Creating a contrast so stark that it almost comes across as darkly comical, the "triumphant" march of the previous movement is followed without any preparation by an agonizing lament from the strings. The atmosphere here is one of both sadness and resignation.
A second theme sounds consoling at first (1:48), but its obsessive repetitions eventually become threatening, ultimately leading to a dead-end (3:19) and a return of the opening lament from the strings (3:42).

What happens afterward is the most heartrending and emotional moment in the entire symphony: a sustained wail of abject despair (4:54). The main theme appears one last time in its most vehement presentation (5:17) as the intensity gradually dies down.
A solemn and desolate chorale from the trombones follows almost in the manner of a requiem (5:43) and, after that, the second theme returns, but now devoid of any consolation and in total defeat (6:13). From there, the volume of the orchestra proceeds to drop. Over a steady but faltering pulse from the basses (a heartbeat?) and with shuddering sobs from the cellos (6:54), the music moves beyond our hearing and disappears into the darkness.

Beethoven famously composed two symphonies that began in darkness and ended in victory, the Fifth and the Ninth, the latter concluding with the world-famous "Ode to Joy". Subsequently, countless composers in the following hundred years would imitate him in creating works with a similar message of triumph over adversity.
With this symphony, Tchaikovsky seemed to want to depict the opposite: life may have sublime moments that make one realize it's worth living, where one feels the greatest happiness and fulfillment in the world, yet have it all taken away or rendered trivial soon after with terrible ease.
A more concise way to say it is the harsh reality that some stories, like Tchaikovsky's, simply don't have happy endings. Along with very few other composers, he wasn't afraid of presenting this uncomfortable truth.
