About Michael Schwartz, MD:
After graduating from Rush Medical College in 1979, Dr. Michael W. Schwartz completed his medical residency at the University of Washington (UW) in 1986. He then trained in endocrinology under the mentorship of Dan Porte, Jr., and joined the full-time faculty at UW in 1993, rising to the rank of full professor in 2001. In 2007, Dr. Schwartz became the founding director of the Diabetes and Obesity Center of Excellence at UW, and he subsequently guided the transformation of this center into the UWMedicine Diabetes Institute, which he currently co-directs with Dr. Stephanie Page. Dr. Schwartz has also served as Director of the NIDDK-funded Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) at UW for more than a decade.
Over his 30-year career, Dr. Schwartz has mixed the care of patients with diabetes, obesity and other medical diseases with an active program in diabetes and obesity research, which has produced more than 270 publications. In 2010, he was selected as holder of the Robert H. Williams Endowed Chair in Medicine at UW in recognition of his research achievements. Among many other awards, Dr. Schwartz is the 2022 recipient of the Roy O. Greep award for outstanding research from The Endocrine Society.

The Sustaining Behavior Change Conference grows from the belief that limitations in our ability to help people make lasting changes in their health-related behaviors is one of the greatest challenges to the well-being of our population. Whether it is adopting healthy eating and physical activity habits, or curtailing the use of unhealthy substances or behaviors, people seem able to initiate behavior change, but a range of forces typically lead to a return of previous behaviors.
The Sustaining Behavior Change Conference assembles a group of leading scholars in a range of disciplines, including behavioral sciences, behavioral economics, marketing and neuroscience to share their insights and perspectives on this important issue. Our goal is to spur creative new thinking about how we might study and implement strategies that will foster effective long-term behavior change.
