A snappy 60s surf cue with slick phrasing, fast feet, and a rhythm that taps the foot.
On this day in jazz history…
On January 17, 1934, pianist Cedar Walton was born in Dallas, Texas, far from New York's jazz center but right in the path of the post-war bebop wave that would redefine modern piano.
Coming of age as bebop exploded, he faced the choice: safe local gigs or chase the risky New York dream. Walton took the leap. He moved to New York, joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1961 to 1964, and became a first-call sideman.
His compositions ("Bolivia," "Ugetsu," "Mosaic") became standards, defining modern mainstream piano with sophisticated harmonies rooted in swing and blues. By the 1960s and 70s, rock and fusion threatened acoustic jazz. Clubs closed, economics tightened, yet Walton kept the music vital on bandstands and records.
His legacy endures beyond his 2013 death: compose strong melodies, keep deep time, and balance sophistication with groove. Proof that modern jazz's center often lives with the quiet craftsmen, not just the loud revolutionaries.
