Day 16 of my America the Beautiful ride. Southwestern Utah.
There is "scenic," and then there is Utah Highway 12. In this video, we take you on a journey through the heart of the American West, carving through the red rock hoodoos of Red Canyon, scaling the 9,600-foot heights of Boulder Mountain, and braving the infamous "Hogsback."
We kick things off on US-89, passing through the lush Dixie National Forest before hanging a right onto Highway 12 (An All-American Road). This isn't just a ride; it’s a geological time machine. From the "fairyland" arches of Red Canyon to the white slickrock waves of Grand Staircase-Escalante, every mile is a postcard.
The Challenge: This route isn't for the faint of heart. We tackle the Hogsback—a razor-thin ridge where the pavement drops off 1,000 feet on both sides with zero guardrails. Add in 10% grades, 180-degree switchbacks, and wandering open-range cattle, and you’ve got a ride that demands your total focus.
🏍️ RIDER TIPS FOR HWY 12
Watch for "Open Range": This is cattle country. They don't care about your line; they will stand in the middle of the road.
Check the Weather: You can go from 100°F in the canyons to 50°F and hail on Boulder Mountain in thirty minutes. Layer up!
Fuel Up: Gas stations are sparse between Escalante and Torrey. Don't pass up a pump.
Brakes: On the 10% grades of US-89 and Hwy 12, use engine braking to keep your rotors from glowing.
