8 Feet of snow fell in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California between 2/16 - 2/19, causing extended closures of Interstate 80 between Colfax, CA, and Stateline, NV. Heavy snow created dangerous driving conditions, causing multiple cars to spin out and become stranded, and a semi truck that jacknifed. CalTrans snowplows and graders continued to work on the highway. Blizzard conditions slammed the I-80 corridor between Colfax, CA, and Stateline, NV, on Tuesday, February 17, closing nearly 150 miles of freeway. The winter storm sadly killed 9 people, 8 of whom were backcountry skiers near Castle Peak on Tuesday when an avalanche struck their guided tour. Another skier died on Wednesday at Northstar Resort in a separate accident.
