A detailed look at an awesome set of 2 70s Platt Schindlers.

These lifts are totally awesome. They go 2 m/s and have intelligent levelling (the oldest intelligent levelling lifts I have found). And most of all these lifts are totally original and are relay controlled.

It was risky doing this as the caretaker lives here. I have been trying to get in here for 10 years. Either residents or caretaker would not let me in. Sadly I didn't get quite as fast as 2 m/s on top but I had to be very quick. I should have pressed some floors then jumped on to get a good ride but I was very visible getting on the lift. The reason the lift was moving when on auto was an intermittent fault due to a failed relay that kept sending it to first floor.

Relay lift choosers are getting very rare now. There are very few sets of 2 lifts from the 70s or earlier that are still original. With multiple lifts it has to decide which lift serves a call. Without any chooser which is inefficient and both lifts will serve a single call. A lift chooser has to do a task which is extremely complex to do with relays, they can have hundreds of relays to work.

There are very few lift choosers left. This is because generic lift engineers are not used to working with complex relay systems. And also because it can be hard to find parts for mechanical logic devices.

Mechanical logic devices are often used as part of the relay logic. They create logic circuits by using moving parts. These are very unique to different manufacturers lift models. Mechanical devices are often used to create logic circuits based on the lift position (called a floor selector), and can be very individualized systems for dispatching the lifts.
