DAY 1 SUMMARY:

Day 1 set a chaotic stage for the whole case and ended with Au Pair Juliana still on direct examination.

The jury heard basics from the state about Christine Banfield, the family, and Joseph Ryan (TacoSupreme7000), plus 911 timing and first responders describing what they saw in the bedroom, including Christine still breathing with severe neck wounds and multiple guns in the room. The medical examiner said Christine’s neck injuries were quickly fatal.

Then Juliana Peres Magalhães testified that she and Brendan started a romantic relationship in August 2022, that he controlled the FetLife profile and chats (though she would chat to Joseph sometimes), and that he picked Feb. 24, 2023 as the date to carry out their plan. She said they talked about needing alibis, showed messages discussing what Joseph was expected to bring that day (a knife, chains), and claimed Brendan told her to swap phones and create a new Apple ID.

On the day of the killings, Juliana told the jury she and Brendan walked into the master bedroom, saw Joseph on top of Christine, heard Christine yell “Brendan, he has a knife,” and she says Brendan shot Joseph. She said Christine told her to call 911 (Defense asked the medical examiner if it were possible for Christine to even speak at this time - ME said her larynx injury may have prevented speech), then she hung up after Brendan gestured for her to hang up (this explains the double 911 calls). Juliana says she got a towel at Brendan’s direction, denies stabbing Christine, and says she later shot Joseph because she believed he was still alive.


CASE BACKGROUND:

This case is about Brendan Banfield, a former IRS agent charged with the Feb. 24, 2023 killings of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan inside the family’s Herndon, Virginia home. Prosecutors say Banfield and the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, had a romantic relationship and worked together to lure Ryan to the house through online messages, then stage the scene to look like a self-defense situation. Juliana originally faced a murder charge, but she later took a manslaughter plea deal. Prosecutors said they will recommend time served, and the court is holding her sentencing until after she testifies against Banfield, so her cooperation is a major part of the state’s case.
