The A259 is the longest road in the 2-road numbering zone, running for 120 miles (193km) from Folkestone, along the south coast, to Havant. The section from Pevensey to Brenzett east of Rye, other than the urban roads around Hastings, forms part of the south coast trunk road, part of the strategic road network. In the original 1922 road numbering, the A259 ran from Dover to Worthing, but it lost a few miles in the east, and got extended westwards to Chichester, then along the former A27 to Havant. Despite its length and importance, much of the A259 remains almost unimproved, running straight through most of the towns and cities along its length with almost no bypasses. Consequently, there are often longer but quicker routes available.
This video shows a westbound journey along the A259 Grand Junction Road & King's Road along the sea-front in Brighton, from the mini-roundabout with the A23 to the junction with the A2010 West Road near the Grand Hotel.
