MUSCLE RELEASE: UPPER TRAP
The upper trapezius muscle is one of the most overused and tight muscles in the body in modern society. The upper trapezius muscle attaches the head/neck to the shoulder blade and collarbone. Its main action is to shrug your shoulders up. The stressed posture that leads to your ears coming up to your shoulders and shoulders curled and hunched forward, leads to overuse of the upper trapezius muscle and chronic tightness. It is common to find trigger points and muscle spasms within the muscle.
Upper trapezius tightness can be caused by poor posture, and in turn, can contribute to furthering poor posture. Releasing spasms and muscle knots in the tissue can help reduce tightness and pain, and improve neck range of motion.
