In this video, I create a mixed media Valentine card using gouache and watercolour.
I start by painting the background in ultramarine gouache, using visible brushstrokes and mixing small amounts of white to create tonal variation and a soft sky-like feeling. I leave three large heart shapes in negative space.
Inside those hearts, I paint a purple watercolour mix made from permanent rose and ultramarine, working wet-on-wet and letting the pigment move naturally.
The card is finished with stamped lettering that reads “I choose you, Always.” The stamping didn’t go exactly as planned, so I experimented with white gouache and a Posca pen to improve legibility.
This became a small lesson in adapting materials and layering solutions. I also added small white details, blue coloured pencil outlines, and light splatters to bring the composition together.
This session is about experimentation, adapting when things don’t work as expected, and embracing mixed media learning.
It’s layered, imperfect, and personal.
Let’s pause, practice, and play together. ✨💛
