From the luxurious Yacht-Master to the hardy Explorer and the dive-ready Submariner, Rolex has created a number of iconic sports watches throughout history. In this video we’re going to cover 8 different Rolex sports watches from their Professional series of high-performance timepieces.
Explorer
Simplicity and functionality were fundamental features of Rolex’s first-ever sports watch collection. Launched in 1953 to celebrate the successful summit of Mt. Everest, the Rolex Explorer was specifically designed to withstand the harsh outdoor elements. Evolving these qualities further, the Explorer II was released in 1971 and offered the added functionality of a 24-hour hand. Both Explorer models have only ever been crafted from stainless steel, and modern references combine 100m water resistance with Rolex's Paraflex shock absorbers for maximum durability.
Submariner
In 1953 Rolex launched one of the world’s first diving watches:the Submariner. Rotating bezels, black dials and waterproof cases defined this Rolex sports watch collection. Modern models offer 300m of water resistance and bezels with scratch-resistant Cerachrom inserts. Date or no date options are available within this line, along with a selection of steel, yellow gold, white gold and two-tone options. From elegant tuxedos to swimsuits, the Submariner has a universally appealing, simple aesthetic that looks good with any attire.
GMT-Master
The Rolex GMT-Master collection was launched in 1955 and was intended to be a timekeeping tool for professional pilots to simultaneously track two time zones. The watch featured a 24hr hand and an accompanying scale on its red and blue bidirectional rotating bezel, becoming an icon for collectors and pilots alike. In the 1980s, the collection evolved into the GMT-Master II, gaining independent hour hands and the ability to track three time zones. Modern models are powered by Cal. 3285 movements, and are available in steel, Everose, white gold and two-tone variations.
Daytona
Introduced in 1963, the Rolex Daytona was a chronograph sports watch originally designed for tracking race car speeds. Today the collection spans yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold, stainless steel, platinum, and two-tone versions. Cerachrom ceramic bezels, solid gold bezels, and movements with vertical clutches entwine some of Rolex’s finest materials and technology together, making them an ideal choice for those who want a luxurious and functional timepiece
Yacht-Master
The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as a luxury-oriented sports watch and in 2007 it was joined by the Yacht-Master II - a highly-advanced professional regatta timer. The bezels of Rolex Yacht-Master watches are constructed from either solid 18k gold or platinum, while Yacht-Master II bezels can also be crafted from Cerachrom. Featuring 100m of water resistance, Yacht-Master watches are opulent timepieces that pair with casual and smart attire alike.
Sea-Dweller
Launched in 1967, the Rolex Sea-Dweller is the brand’s ultimate underwater watch, offering even greater water resistance than the Submariner. Contending with the challenges of saturation diving and decompression issues, this Rolex sports watch features a helium escape valve. The Deepsea Sea-Dweller followed in 2008 with an even greater depth rating and is only available in steel, while the Sea-Dweller is also offered in a two-tone configuration. With scratch-resistant Cerachrom bezels and a highly-advanced case design, the Rolex Deepsea collection offers water-resistance up to 3,900 meters.
Milgauss
With paramagnetic components and a soft iron Faraday cage, the Rolex Milgauss collection was released in 1956 as an antimagnetic wristwatch specifically developed for scientists. Only ever crafted from stainless steel, these models are resistant to magnetic forces greater than 1,000 gauss, and modern references feature bright orange lightning bolt-shaped seconds hands and green-tinted sapphire crystals.
Air-King
The Rolex Air-King is a simple design with an aesthetic geared towards lovers of pilot’s watches. The collection was not formally launched until the 1950s despite the ‘Air-King’ name being attached to watches during the 1940s. Now considered one of Rolex’s professional collections, the Air-King is loved for its affordability and versatility. Positioned as an entry-level offering, the collection now features an antimagnetic case and movement, along with dials adorned with vibrant green and yellow accents.
