After a weekend in the White Mountains, I’m back in Massachusetts — and somehow the birding only gets better.
Sunday afternoon I head to Salisbury Beach to film grey seals hauling out along the shoreline, then later that evening photograph a long-awaited lifer owl close to home. One of those species that feels almost mythical until you’re finally looking at it through the viewfinder.
Monday I join a Brookline Bird Club trip to Cape Ann, working the rocky coastline and scanning the water in classic winter fashion. That afternoon I make one more stop at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge — and find another lifer waiting for me back in Essex County.
And just when I think the weekend can’t stack up any higher… a bonus owl makes an appearance.
This episode is a reminder that sometimes you travel out of state chasing birds — and sometimes the best surprises are right back at home.
