Trump pivots to 10% global tariff after 'deeply disappointing' Supreme Court ruling

Описание: US President Donald Trump has called the US Supreme Court's decision to strike down his sweeping tariffs "deeply disappointing" and "done to protect other countries", as he moved to swiftly announce a temporary 10% global tariff for 150 days under a different legal authority.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court's justices ruled that the law at issue did not grant Trump the power he claimed to impose tariffs in 2025. The ruling puts about US$175 billion ($247 billion) in tariff revenue collected over the last year subject to potential refunds, according to estimates provided to Reuters by Penn-Wharton Budget Model economists.

When asked if he plans to issue refunds, Trump criticised the ruling's lack of directive, telling journalists, "Wouldn't you think they would have put one sentence in there saying that keep the money or don't keep the money, right?"

"I guess it has to get litigated for the next two years," he said, indicating a quick, automatic refund process remains unlikely.

Trump also told the briefing that he was ordering new tariffs under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, duties that would go on top of surviving tariffs and take effect in about three days.

The never-used Section 122 authority allows the president to impose duties of up to 15 per cent for up to 150 days on any and all countries to address "large and serious" balance of payments issues.

The new tariffs do not require investigations or impose other procedural limits, however, after 150 days, Congress would need to approve their extension.
