Corydoras Care Guide (Feeding, Water Parameters, Tank Setup, Tank Size, Tank Mates, Breeding)
In today's video, I'll be sharing my care guide for Corydoras aeneus, also known as the bronze or albino Cory catfish. Corydoras are peaceful, social catfish that make a great addition to many freshwater tanks. I've been keeping these fish for nearly 18 months, and in this video, I'll cover everything you need to know to provide them with the best care possible.
To start, I’ll introduce you to the Corydoras species, focusing on the different varieties, including albino, bronze, and the rarer laser and black Venezuelan Corydoras. I’ll also talk about the recent reclassification of Corydoras into seven different groups, making it easier to distinguish between the different lines of catfish.
Next, I’ll discuss tank size and setup. I’ll go over why it's important to provide Corydoras with a tank that has a large bottom footprint for swimming and foraging. I’ll also cover substrate options, addressing the debate around fine sand versus gravel, and how my Corydoras have done well in tanks with different types of substrate. I'll explain how to create a tank setup that meets their specific needs without damaging their delicate barbels.
When it comes to water parameters, there’s some uncertainty about the optimal conditions for Corydoras aeneus due to debates about their natural habitat. I’ll share what has worked best for me in terms of pH and temperature, and discuss their adaptability to various water conditions, even room-temperature tanks in some cases.
I’ll also cover their diet and feeding routine. Corydoras are bottom-feeders, and I’ll explain what types of sinking food work best for them, such as Fluval Bug Bites and Hikari Mini Algae Wafers. Additionally, I'll share the treats I use, like bloodworms, and my experience with their feeding behaviors.
Corydoras are peaceful fish, making them ideal for community tanks. I’ll talk about some of the best tank mates I’ve kept with mine, including neon tetras, guppies, rasboras, gouramis, shrimp, and snails. I’ll also briefly touch on their venomous spine and how it can affect tank mates like plecos if they’re not careful.
For those interested in breeding Corydoras, I’ll touch on my experience with their spontaneous spawning in my tank. While I haven’t actively pursued breeding, my Corydoras have been regularly laying eggs, showing that they are relatively easy to breed if the conditions are right.
Lastly, I’ll mention some common health issues that can arise due to inbreeding. While Corydoras aeneus are generally hardy, there are some genetic defects, such as bumps or stunted growth, that can occur due to their popularity and mass breeding.
Corydoras aeneus are fantastic fish that are well-suited for both beginner and experienced aquarists. I hope this video helps you provide the best care for your Corydoras and ensures they thrive in your tank.
