How To Easily Set Up A Thriving Cherry Shrimp Breeding Tank! (Works With Any Neocaridina Shrimp)

This is my new high-yield cherry shrimp breeding tank, built to produce as many healthy, high-grade Neocaridina shrimp as possible—quickly, compactly, and with minimal maintenance. In this video, I take you through the full setup and share the reasoning behind every decision I made along the way. Whether you're a beginner or just looking to optimize your shrimp breeding setup, this tank is a great starting point.

I cover everything from substrate choice and filtration to lighting, cycling, and decor. Instead of going with a planted scape, I’ve kept things simple and practical—focusing on efficiency, shrimp safety, and maximum baby shrimp survival. I opted for black gravel to encourage algae and biofilm growth, both excellent natural food sources for shrimp. The tank is positioned lengthwise on my rack to save space and make room for future breeding tanks featuring other Neocaridina color morphs.

One of the most important choices I made was the filter. I’m using a USB-powered sponge filter from Hygger that solves a lot of the problems I usually have with sponge filters—no noisy air pump, no splashing, and much finer sponge pores to help protect baby shrimp. I walk through how I modified it further to make it extra shrimp-safe.

For lighting, I’m using the Seaoura SR616—an affordable LED light with a built-in timer that I’ve had great success with. I also explain how I used the dark start cycling method (with a twist) to get this tank ready for shrimp in just over a month.

By Month 2, the tank was ready for shrimp—and shortly after adding them, I spotted baby shrimp already thriving! I’ve added moss, floating plants, and terracotta hiding spots to help encourage breeding and support shrimp health.
