Описание: L'arrière saison takes its title from the French title of the nineteenth-century Bildungsroman by Austrian author Adalbert Stifter, Der Nachsommer (1857) (translated into English as Indian Summer). The first-person narrative of the novel recounts the life of Heinrich, the main character, who has been brought up in a very strict household and is, as a result, thoroughly socialized. As he approaches manhood, Heinrich is given the freedom to make choices about his own future and he decides to become a natural scientist, spending long hours hiking through the Alpine landscapes around him and observing the nature he finds there. As he does so, there is a noticeable shift in Heinrich who seems, at privileged moments, to open himself up to the world, to exist alongside nature rather than attempt always to analyse and understand it. During one of his outings, Heinrich stumbles across an isolated house as he seeks shelter from a storm. The owner, the mysterious and enigmatic Baron von Risach, offers him refuge in the house which comes to be known as the Rosenhaus since one side of it is entirely covered with roses and many different kinds of roses are found throughout its grounds – an image that seems to have had a great impact on Grandrieux since the script that he wrote for an (to date unfilmed) adaptation of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness begins with a description of a rose-covered wall that resembles something from Stifter’s novel far more than anything we might find in Conrad’s (see Grandrieux 2012). Von Risach becomes a mentor to Heinrich, his particular vision of the world becoming very influential in all of the young man’s decisions henceforth.
