Study Finds Most Packaged Baby Foods Are Ultra-Processed, High in Additives

Описание: A recent study published in the journal Nutrients has raised serious concerns about packaged baby foods meant for children aged six to 36 months.

The research, supported by data from The George Institute for Global Health, found that over 70% of baby food products analyzed were ultra-processed and contained additives linked to inflammation and disruption of the gut microbiome.

In many cases, cosmetic additives reportedly replaced fruits and vegetables as primary ingredients — a worrying trend given that infants’ digestive systems are still developing.

The study also found that several baby snacks and pouches had high sugar content, even when labelled “no added sugar.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ultra-processed foods already make up a significant share of children’s diets and are associated with obesity, diabetes, and heart disease later in life.

Researchers noted that many products failed to meet nutrition standards set by the World Health Organization, especially regarding protein, calorie balance, and salt levels.

Health experts are advising parents to read labels carefully and prioritize minimally processed foods whenever possible.
