Athletes who participate in high impact sports such as Running, Jumping, and Skiing put heavy stress on their knees.
Due to overuse, these athletes can develop Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, also known as Runner’s knee or Jumpers knee, which causes painful inflammation in the knee joint. Runner’s report Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome as similar to shin splints, but with pain radiating from higher in the leg.
Signs of Runner’s Knee include:
Sharp Pain in the front of the knee while bending, kneeling, or squatting.
A dull ache, that gradually increases when bending the knee for long periods of time, such as driving in the car, or sitting at a desk.
Cracking and popping sounds when using stairs.
To treat Runner’s Knee, Physicians first suggest R.I.C.E. or (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) in addition to anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain. Failure to eliminate the pain at this point will suggest the possibility of malalignment. Patients will progress to Supportive braces, athletic tape, and Physical Therapy to keep the knee in proper position during rehabilitation. If conservative treatment fails, a sports medicine physician may suggest surgery to remove the fragments of damaged cartilage.
To prevent Runner's Knee, physicians suggest patients
wear well-fitting shoes,
stretch thoroughly before exercising.
avoid running on hard surfaces.
Use proper technique when exercising or playing sports to ensure correct alignment.
