This tea tree bonsai is already well on its way — but keeping it refined without slowing future development takes a different approach.
In this video I work through the process of maintaining a near-finished tree while still allowing one key branch to continue developing, and also uncovering some areas with potential for further refinement. Most of the work is routine trimming, shown in timelapse, but there are moments where restraint matters more than cutting.
This is the balance we often have to strike with bonsai:
maintenance in one area, development in another — sometimes on the same tree, at the same time.
If you’re working with more mature material, or wondering why “just trimming to a shape” can sometimes set a tree back, this video should be useful.
