At the time I did this work there was some concern from a few bonsai fellows about me going too deep while removing the bark and cambium… very normal observation but cork bark elm develop this beautiful thick bark and because I had to remove the bark ring and a very thin layer of the cambium it seemed like I butchered the little guy!
However, here it is. Very nice radial nebari. Incredible amount of thin roots and plenty to support recovery.
A couple things that I believe made it successful. Notice the pond basket: promotes air flow and on a normal pot as the roots develop they will go in circles and do this spaghetti looking root system. With the pond basket they actually stop developing against the edges of the pot and promote more inner roots. Because I used a akadama base soil it also promotes very thin roots. At the area where I wanted roots, upper part of the ring cut, I applied sphagnum moss with root hormone: the sphagnum moss is great to keep the area moist and hold the root hormone so that it doesn’t get totally flushed after watering.
Now let’s watch this guy develop and in 3-5 years I expect to have a very nice looking little fellow!
