Описание: In this conclusion to our series, Dr. Shabir Ally advises us to take a balanced approach to #hadith. On the one extreme, many Muslims accept every hadith included in the books. On the other extreme, some argue that hadith are too problematic and should be abandoned. Dr. Shabir says we should follow the #Quran and the way of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Whereas we follow the Quran knowing it's the word of #God, in the case of hadith, we have to determine if it's really from the #Prophet. With both the Quran and hadith, we must we must look at contextual issues to understand how we should apply it in our time. Dr. Shabir shares some principles he uses to judge hadith. For example, the hadith should not contradict the Quran. If it's difficult to see how the two can be aligned without compromising the Quran, then the hadith should be laid aside. If there's a clash between reason and hadith, because of the uncertainty about whether the Prophet actually said the hadith or not, we should hesitate to let the hadith dictate for us what to believe on that matter. Dr. Shabir cautions that he isn't talking about super-rational aspects of Islam, including things like angels and the life hereafter. He's discussing things that are contra-rational or irrational. When it comes to hadith dealing with what people saw, observed and practiced, these living practices are more dependable than conceptual issues that people had to memorize. He ends by encouraging our current generation of scholars to be braver in delineating these criteria and using them publicly rather than merely covertly.
