In part 17 of our #hadith series, Dr. Shabir Ally explains that Muslim scholars have widely recognized that people invented hadiths to encourage #Muslims to do good and avoid wrong. They forged narratives to show that if someone did a small deed, they would get a huge reward, and if someone committed a small sin, they would get a huge punishment. When scholars went to work assessing the authenticity of hadith, they weeded out the most extreme of these hadiths, but others remain in our classical books which are thought to authentic. Dr. Shabir gives us some examples of these problematic hadiths and shows how they pose logical contradictions.
