Crystal perspectives on magma evolution timescales: insights from Puyehue & Cordón Caulle & Ascension Island
Crystal cargoes erupted or emplaced with magma batches have been widely used to unravel pre-eruptive processes from past eruptions. Yet, when these processes occurred, and in particular the timescales of magma ascent, are the most important variables for forecasting future eruptions, and interpreting geophysical unrest. Using the intraplate Ascension Island (an active, UK Overseas Territory) and Volcan Puyehue (Chile) as case studies, I will demonstrate how crystal cargoes record pre-eruptive changes that are vital for helping us to understand the timescales of magma ascent, and discuss the implications for geophysical monitoring of future unrest at these (and other) volcanic centres.
