People all around the globe have Celtic heritage in their histories combined with roots in other cultures. There are a number of reasons why, but that's a completely different discussion.
Right here and now, what is the smart way to go if you want to combine different aspects of a complex personal heritage in a single outfit?
It's actually an old question - especially here in the USA. Take a look at a large group of kilt enthusiasts, such as the Kilts & Culture Facebook group, and you'll find heritage mixes like Cherokee-Scottish, Scottish-Jewish, African-Irish, Welsh-French, Brazilian-Scottish, Scottish-Chinese, etc. etc. etc.
This time, the question came to us from a gentleman who has African as well as Scottish roots, so Rocky and Erik pondered that particular mix.
For instance, could you make or wear a kilt made from African cloth? Could you wear a kilt with a dashiki shirt? How could you incorporate traditional African cultural items into a Highland Dress outfit? For example maybe a kilt pin or brooch that looks like a Mande tribal mask?
The lads offer some basic advice on how to balance an outfit so it looks intentional and dignified, not slapped together.
The key take-away? The best mixed heritage outfits usually have one signature element - one garment or ornament that stands out more than the rest. One thing that "does the talking" allowing the viewer to focus on it and be blown away by its beauty and/or power. In this formula, the other parts of the outfit take a supporting, complementary role. They may be subdued, or they may be strong looking in their own right, but tone perfectly with the main element through use of color.
Of course your mileage may vary. And the less formal the outfit, the less this sort of thinking matters, you could say. How would you combine heritage themes for a simple "going to a show" date outfit? How would you mix them for a wedding?
Hey, nobody said this was easy. But it can be a lot of fun, too.
