The "Royal Ludroth" is a male Leviathan that first made its appearance in Monster Hunter 3. This aquatic predator is characterized by a crown-like crest composed of several finger-like appendages tipped with black spikes, and a large, spongey yellow mane. Its long, serpentine body is supported by four squat limbs, with the hind legs shaped like paddles for swimming and the forelegs muscular and tipped with long black claws. Instead of traditional teeth, its jaws are lined with shear-like plates designed for gripping and tearing.
The Royal Ludroth’s spongey mane serves a unique and vital function, absorbing gallons of water to fuel its water-based defenses. It can unleash mucus-based globules to hinder foes or expel high-speed jets of water to repel attackers. An adept swimmer, it dominates its aquatic environment, hunting with precision and efficiency. Often accompanied by a harem of female Ludroth, this alpha male is fiercely territorial and will aggressively defend its group against perceived threats.
Hunters targeting a Royal Ludroth can break its head and mane or sever its tail during combat. The mane, in particular, deflates as the creature’s stamina wanes, prompting it to retreat to water sources to recover. When weakened, its glowing orange eyes dim to a dull dark grey. In Rage mode, it launches three water bombs capable of inflicting Waterblight, drastically slowing stamina recovery. Sonic Bombs used underwater may prompt the Leviathan to drop a Wyvern Tear, while damaging its mane can result in additional item drops.
This aggressive Leviathan shares its territory with other formidable monsters and exhibits notable behaviors. For instance, it often clashes with Gobul when encountered in the same area, ignoring hunters to engage its rival. Similarly, while it may attack Great Jaggi, it more often chooses to flee or disregard them entirely. Interestingly, Royal Ludroth and Lagiacrus share several combat techniques, such as torso slams and projectile attacks, though each uses these abilities uniquely within their respective environments.
Strategically, the Royal Ludroth is weakest to Fire and Thunder elements, making these the ideal choices for hunters. Early in battles, targeting its head with impact damage, explosives, or Bow’s Arrow Bombs can frequently stagger it, providing a tactical advantage. When in water, its mane puffs up to signal its rejuvenation, and hunters must act swiftly to prevent it from regaining strength.
