The Fortunate Ones: A Musical Midrash
There’s a boy named Adam. He’s walking in a garden.
With a girl named Eve.
They love each other. They want for nothing,
Except maybe to be free.
Eve says, “Adam,
I think there’s more than this world’s giving me.
I want to know. I want to go
Where my little heart leads.
So I’m asking you, Adam,
Won’t you go with me?”
This boy named Adam, not understanding,
Says, “Girl you’re killing me.”
Says, “Don’t you know that we can’t go
Wherever we just please?”
Eve says, “Adam,
Hear the wind in the apple trees.
My sweet Adam
It’s a song and it’s calling to me.
If you’ll listen, my love,
I kinda think you’ll agree.
“Cuz there’s so much in this great big world
That we can never know unless we try.
There’s a wildness out beyond our reach.
Don’t you think it’s time to maybe take a bite?
All I know is something’s pulling on me
Like the moon keeps enticing the sea.
Adam listen deep within yourself.
Something’s inviting you, too, you’ll see. (It’s saying)
“Adam, can’t you imagine
That there’s so much more
Than you conceive of
Or even dream of
Just beyond your door?
I see your face now, and I understand
It’s scary, yeah, to take that leap.
Stay if you need to stay, it’ll break my heart
To ever have to leave you.
But Adam, I just can’t stay any more.
Oh, Adam, I’m walking through that door.
Hey Adam, I’m going, won’t you go with me?”
