A gap wedge in golf is a scoring club designed to fill the distance “gap” between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge, giving golfers better control over yardages on approach shots. It typically has a loft between 48° and 52°, which helps produce a higher, softer shot than a pitching wedge but more distance than a sand wedge. The gap wedge became popular as iron sets strengthened in loft over time, creating larger distance gaps at the short end of the bag. Golfers commonly use a gap wedge for full approach shots, controlled half-swings, and bump-and-run chips, making it one of the most versatile clubs for distances inside about 120 yards.
