In this lecture, we investigate how we can use symmetry to make inferences about the energy eigenstates of a given Hamiltonian without needing to solve the time-independent Schrödinger equation directly. We look at different symmetries such as translation, parity, and reflection as well as those symmetries generated by observables, which we analyze in the context of continuous groups and infinitesimal generators. We then connect the notions of symmetry and conservation in elegant fashion. In the end, we apply these techniques to analyze the energy eigenstates of the free particle and discuss how to evolve such a state in time.
