In this episode, I collect my latest project bike, a 1996 Honda Fireblade CBR900RR, an SC33 CBR900RRT to be exact. I always like to have a reasonably modern bike as well as older project bikes. I have recently had a Triumph Sprint, but this time I thought I would have something a little more sporty. I have had 3 previous Fireblades, and I remember enjoying riding them, and don’t think I am too old for one, yet!

Ideally, I wanted to get one of the first Fireblades, an SC28, with the two separate headlights. Unfortunately, the only ones I could find were in great condition at prices only a collector would pay, or really damaged and incomplete. I couldn’t find one that would be a sensible buy.

I always like to buy project motorcycles that once completed can be sold for the amount of money that I have spent on them. Covering both the purchase price and the cost of the parts required to restore them, obviously, my time is free. The parts for the early model also seemed to be at collectors prices so I stopped looking for an SC28 model and started to look for the next model, an SC33.

I wanted a rideable bike, but one that I could add some value to by fixing its issues. I was hoping to find one that had the original frame and engine combination and didn’t have a damaged frame. When one of the early Fireblades is involved in an accident the outside of the top frame rail frequently gets damaged, I wanted to avoid this.

I found this bike online, and it seemed to fit the bill. A good price, needs paint, wasn’t a write-off, didn’t appear to have frame damage. It also came with some of the things needed to restore it back to its original state.

Having agreed the price, we went in the evening to collect the bike. Using the Transit I am turning into a campervan to collect it (see my other video series if you're interested in that).
