Is Singapore REALLY that expensive? Travel on a Budget with FREE activities!
Singapore, a vibrant city-state renowned for its gleaming skyscrapers, luxurious shopping malls, and world-class dining, can often seem like an expensive destination - I have had so many of my backpacker friends say they WOULD NEVER visit Singapore on a backpacking trip because of the cost and quite frankly, I couldn’t believe what i heard!! Yes, the cost is pricer than most Asia countries - however, with careful planning and a bit of creativity, it's entirely possible to experience the best of Singapore on a budget. Make sure you stay tuned to see all the FREE activities we got up too, the must see spots and the cheapest way to get around and eat in this wonderful city!!
Free Activities:
Gardens by the Bay: This sprawling waterfront park is a feast for the senses, with towering Supertrees, lush floral displays, and serene walking paths. Admission is free, although some attractions like the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome require a fee. We decided to go with the Cloud Dome and visited at night time. It really was incredible and I would definitely recommend it if you are happy to spend a little extra.
Satay by the Bay: A great spot full of food stalls right next to the Gardens by the Bay. We found some really delicious and cheap food here - actually cheaper than the Hawker Centres!
Marina Bay Sands Light and Water Show: Every evening, the Marina Bay Sands hotel puts on a spectacular light and water show that's completely free to watch. Find a spot along the waterfront and enjoy the dazzling display. Even in the pouring down rain, we couldn’t believe our eyes!
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple: This Buddhist temple is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit and we really enjoyed popping in during our time in China Town. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated. Would also recommend spending some time wandering the art work around China Town streets, as well as getting lost in the stalls and lanterns.
Hawker Centers: Singapore is famous for its delicious and affordable hawker food. Explore the various hawker centers around the city and sample a variety of local dishes. We visited the most famous and iconic La Pau Sat Hawker Centre which is a 130 year old Victorian building filled with over 80 food stalls to choose from!!
Bugis Street: This bustling street market is a great place to find cheap souvenirs and clothes. You can also find some delicious and affordable food stalls here. We didn’t really need to buy anything and it was very busy, so maybe wasn’t entirely for us but was still cool to check it out and had some nice street art work too.
MRT Transport:
Singapore's efficient and affordable MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system is a great way to get around the city. A single trip costs just a few dollars, and there are also unlimited travel passes available for multiple days. We opted to tap our cards as we went through the MRTs and over two days we spent less than $10 SGD each (around £5.90) and we used it a LOT!
Other Budget-Friendly Tips:
Stay in a hostel or budget hotel: There are many affordable accommodation options available in Singapore, from hostels to budget hotels. We found a private room in a Hostel worked well for the five us and would definitely recommend Futura Boutique Hostel. We also had free breakfast and use of the washing machines during our stay here.
Take advantage of free walking tours: Many companies offer free walking tours of Singapore, which is a great way to see the city and learn about its history and culture. We would have done this if we had an extra day or two.
Pack a picnic lunch: This is a great way to save money on food, especially if you're planning on spending a day at the beach or park.
Drink tap water: Singapore's tap water is safe to drink, so you can save money by refilling your water bottle instead of buying bottled water.
