NEVADA'S "OPEN CARRY" GUN LAWS

Nevada is an "open carry" state. This means that anyone who has the lawful right to possess a firearm may also openly carry a firearm on his/her person in Nevada. But there are several restrictions and conditions in Nevada. For instance, people may not carry firearms in such Nevada locations as courthouses.

"CONCEALED FIREARMS" LAWS IN NEVADA

Nevada is a "shall issue" state when it comes to carrying concealed firearms. People who take a course and demonstrate their proficiency with firearms may then obtain a Nevada-issued permit to carry concealed firearms. Note that a separate permit is necessary to carry a semi-automatic firearm in Nevada.

EX-FELONS IN POSSESSION OF FIREARMS IN NEVADA

NRS 202.360 makes it a crime for people convicted of felonies to possess firearms in Nevada. It makes no difference whether the felony occurred in a state other than Nevada, or if the gun is defective.

Like Nevada law, federal law prohibits firearm possession by felons. Federal law also prohibits firearm possession if the person was convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence.

The Nevada offense of being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm is a category B felony. The punishment in Nevada is:

• 1 to 6 years in Nevada State Prison, and

• maybe up to $5,000 in fines
