a brief loop in 23edo, originally posted to instagram (@stalefleas)
23edo is pretty interesting. it has 3 parallel antidiatonic scales, where major and minor flip so that instead of your basic chord scale going
major minor minor major major minor diminished
(I ii iii IV V vi vii°)
the chord qualities all flip so they go
minor major major minor minor major augmented
(i II III iv v VI VII)
granted, the fifth that generates this scale is quite flat (678c) and the thirds are not the same size as in 12edo so the chords have a distinctive quality that tends closer to neutral than 12edo, but i find the differences subtler than one might expect. overall, i find the sound of 23edo to be quite smooth, and think that antidiatonic is a fascinating structure
in a diatonic scale, you have a step pattern that goes
LLsLLLs
where L = large step and s = small step (2 and 1 steps of 12edo, respectively)
in antidiatonic the scale literally flips over so you get
ssLsssL (3 and 4 steps of 23edo, respectively)
strangely enough, even though these seem to be opposite, you can generate both these scales by stacking perfect fifths. a fifth greater than the 7edo "neutral" fifth of 685c will produce a diatonic scale, but a fifth flatter than this will produce an antidiatonic scale. so while anti-diatonic and diatonic scales produce different sounds, they can be thought of as the same scale or structure on opposing poles of a tuning continuum
