Note: this video was shot before COVID-19. Montreal-based Manon De Pauw is a visual illusionist. Her luminous work combines live performance, dance and real-time projections in multi-disciplinary collaborations that add a human element to her abstracted images.
"I work with colour, I work with light and I work with what I call the performed image," she says. "So there's always a sense of movement or a sense of someone behind the image that is making the image happen."
In this piece by filmmaker Alex Cadilla, watch as Manon experiments and creates, navigating both the creative challenges and artistic discoveries found in collaboration.
Collaboration can be a tricky process, especially in this case, where Manon as a visual artist tries to find a shared language with choreographer Pierre-Marc Ouellette. To achieve this, they both stay open to each other's ideas and Manon leaves room for what she describes as "accidents and astonishment." At times, this method of collaboration can be tense, but once they break through, the revelations shift the work in meaningful ways. As she says, "It just flows, you know? He works on something, I work on something, we put it together and it works. It's just magic."
