What are Golliwogs & are they Racist? - Behind the News

Описание: Golliwog dolls are causing a bit of a stir in Australia.

Three Golliwog dolls were a big hit with the judges in the children's soft toy and cloth doll categories at the Royal Show in Adelaide. but not everyone was as impressed and a lot of people complained about them on social media.

The golliwog was first created in a children's book in the late 1800s. The character was based on actors in a type of show that existed back then, called a minstrel show, that made fun of people of African descent.

While golliwogs were quite popular up until the 1970s, many find them offensive because they represent the racism faced by African American people.

Some people say to them the toys just remind them of happy memories from their childhood and the Royal Show organisers say they didn't mean to upset anyone and have apologised for displaying the dolls.
