Video Summary:
00:00 Introduction
The Gilberto Oliva Reserva Blanc was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula, a quantifiable review matrix. Rather than a Boveda acrylic humidor, we used a Boveda bag with 69% Boveda packs for a period of three weeks to ensure that they were properly acclimated and ready to be evaluated.
00:48 Cigar Overview
Originally named "Facunda", a legal dispute with Bacardi caused Oliva to rename it after Gilberto. It's made with an accordian bunching style and the blend includes an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, which is unusual given that Oliva often favours Nicaraguan puros. Meanwhile, its filler may well be the same or at least similar to the original Reserva.
01:53 Look & Feel
The Reserva Blanc has generally better construction and appearance than the original Reserva. Its spring is firmer with fewer soft spots while the caffè latte hue reveals a clean wrapper with little in the way of pronounced veins. Its aromas consist of tonka bean, cinnamon, and milk chocolate.
03:14 Prelight
The prelight reveals a draw that offers a good airflow with just the right level of resistance. Its flavours are an extension of the foot with notes of cinnamon, buttercream, and yeasty brioche.
03:47 Tasting Notes
The first third first delivers a bold Connecticut flavour of cream and white pepper. It then settles to offer a combination of green tea, molasses, and walnuts. The second third starts as far milder before heavily increasing in body and offers an experience that combines marries peanuts, brioche, and white pepper. The final third is consistent and produces notes of Rugbrod, salted caramel, and pecan nuts.
Overall, it's somewhat complex and a touch coarse for a Connecticut cigar. Its balance leans towards the front of the palate with a pleasant lifecycle.
07:57 Burn
The draw remains consistent while the smoke offers a pleasantly cool temperature. Both the burn angle and ash backbone were excellent.
08:43 Overall Experience
The cigar features the same band as the original Reserva but with a different colour scheme, which actually improves its appearance. The box is similar in that it is identical but with different colours. Although more expensive than the original Reserva, it still offers excellent value. Meanwhile, it's a more versatile cigar both thanks to the fresher band but also due to the more approachable flavour profile.
11:09 Pairings
Opt for a bowl of nuts as a snack or dried fruit. Similarly, milk chocolate is a great option. Meanwhile, smoked salmon on rye bread would be a solid choice. As for beverages, consider beer or ale such as an IPA. You can also opt for a creamy cappuccino or root beer.
